How to Sell a PDF Without Letting Buyers Download It (2026)

Updated · HelpRange

If you sell a PDF as a file, every buyer can forward it – one copy in a Telegram group or a "free download" site and your price drops to zero. To sell a PDF without giving buyers a download, you change what they receive: not a file, but personal access to an online reader that shows the pages, puts the buyer's e-mail on each one and can be switched off. This guide compares the delivery methods creators use, what each one actually stops, and how to set up view-only delivery while keeping the checkout you already have (Kajabi, Gumroad, Shopify, Whop, Teachable, Thinkific, Payhip).

Ways to deliver a paid PDF – and what each one stops

DeliveryBuyer getsCan they pass it on?Can you tell who leaked it?Can you take it back?
Plain download (most stores)The PDF fileYes, freelyNoNo
Expiring or limited download linkThe PDF file, after one clickThe link no; the file yesNoNo
PDF stamping (Gumroad, Payhip)The PDF file with their e-mail stamped inYes – but the stamp names them (until someone edits it out)UsuallyNo
PDF passwordThe PDF file and a passwordYes – the password travels with the fileNoNo
DRM file (Adobe, desktop DRM viewers)A locked file for a special appHardSome toolsYes, in most tools
View-only online readerA personal link to read in the browser or an appNo file to pass; the link asks for their e-mail codeYes – e-mail or buyer ID on every pageYes – on refund, cancellation or after N days

No method stops someone photographing the screen. What a reader can do is make the honest path easy, the dishonest one awkward, and every leaked page traceable to one buyer.

What your platform already does

  • Kajabi: PDFs go in a lesson's Downloads section. The Downloads product uses a temporary link that expires after one minute and needs a login – the link cannot be shared, but the downloaded file can. Details: Kajabi PDF protection.
  • Teachable: the PDF Viewer block shows the PDF in the lesson; the download link appears only if you switch it on. Resource-block files must be downloaded to read.
  • Thinkific: PDF lessons have a "downloadable" option (on by default in the Classic builder, off in the New builder). See Teachable & Thinkific.
  • Gumroad and Payhip: deliver files and offer PDF stamping with the buyer's e-mail (Gumroad, Payhip). See Gumroad PDF protection.
  • Shopify: digital-download apps send a file or a download link. See Shopify PDF protection.

Course platforms' in-lesson viewers keep the PDF inside the course, but their help articles describe no per-student watermark and no record of which pages each student read – a shared login or a screenshot carries no name.

How to sell a PDF as view-only (keeping your checkout)

  1. Upload the PDF to a HelpRange folder. That folder is the product.
  2. Choose protection: view-only (no download or print), a watermark with the buyer's e-mail or your own buyer ID, and – for the strictest level – page images instead of the PDF, so there is no text to copy.
  3. Connect your store: paste the folder's webhook address into Kajabi, Whop, Gumroad (Ping) or Shopify, or use Zapier for Teachable and Thinkific. Each purchase gives the buyer access; refunds or cancellations take it back.
  4. Sell as usual. The buyer gets an e-mail with their personal link, confirms their e-mail with a one-time code and reads on phone, tablet or computer.
  5. Watch for sharing. Page-by-page activity shows who reads; if one buyer's access is used from many places, you get an alert and can switch it off with one click.

The trade-offs to accept

  • Offline reading: buyers need a connection. Fine for guides, workbooks and course notes; less so for a novel read on a plane.
  • Printing: printable worksheets need printing. Offer those pages as a separate download and keep the core content view-only.
  • Buyer expectations: say on the sales page that the book is read online in a protected reader. Surprised buyers ask for refunds; informed ones do not.

When view-only is worth it

  • Higher-priced material: courses, professional templates, research, exam prep, trading or coaching playbooks.
  • Material that loses value when it circulates – it is the content, not the community, that buyers pay for.
  • Subscriptions and cohorts – access should end when the membership ends.

For a $9 e-book sold to fans, stamping or a plain download is often enough; the cost of friction can exceed the cost of piracy.

FAQ

Can I sell a PDF that cannot be downloaded?

Yes – deliver access to an online reader instead of the file. The buyer reads every page, but downloads and printing are off and their e-mail is on each page.

Can I stop people sharing my PDF?

You cannot stop every copy, but with personal links behind an e-mail code, a watermark per buyer and revocable access, a shared link does not open and a leaked page shows whose copy it was.

Do I have to leave Kajabi, Gumroad or Shopify?

No. Keep the checkout; a webhook (or Zapier) tells HelpRange about each purchase and refund.

How much does view-only PDF delivery cost?

In HelpRange, buyer access is part of Pro at $39 per team per month with unlimited buyers and no per-view fees; there is a free 3-day trial.
