Buffer pitch deck (2011)

Seed

Buffer’s founders published their seed deck openly. It is a good example of a small SaaS that raised on real revenue rather than a big vision.

Our opinion, judged by the standards of the time.

What the deck covers (simplified)

  1. What Buffer is
  2. Traction: users and revenue
  3. Growth chart
  4. Problem
  5. Solution
  6. Business model (freemium)
  7. Market
  8. Competition
  9. Team
  10. Investors and advisers
  11. The ask

What works

  • Traction is front and centre: paying customers and revenue, not just a vision.
  • A freemium model backed by real paying users.
  • A small, specific ask that matched the stage.

What is missing

  • Market sizing is thin – social media scheduling looked like a niche.
  • Competition is acknowledged but differentiation is mostly “simpler and better”.
  • Little about how the product would expand beyond scheduling.

Would it raise money in 2026?

Leading with revenue still works best for SaaS seed rounds. Investors would now also ask for net revenue retention and churn by cohort.
