Short answer: you can download a DocSend document only if the sender has turned on Allow downloads for the link you received. If they have, click the download icon in the top right-hand corner of the DocSend viewer. In a Space (data room) you can download one file, a folder or everything as a ZIP. If there is no download icon, the sender has blocked downloads: ask the sender to change the link settings or send you a copy. That decision is theirs. This guide covers both sides: how viewers download, and how senders allow or block downloads.
For viewers: how to download a DocSend document
- Open the DocSend link you received. If asked, enter your e-mail or the passcode the sender gave you.
- Look at the top right-hand corner of the viewer. If the sender allowed downloads, there is a download icon. Click it to save the file.
- To print, use the print icon in the same corner. It also appears only when downloads are allowed. Only PDFs can be printed from the viewer, so to print a PowerPoint, Word or spreadsheet file, download it first.

There is no download button – what now?
Then the sender has restricted downloading and printing. DocSend's help center says a document owner "may restrict visitors from downloading or printing" and advises visitors to "reach out to the document owner to update the link settings". The honest options are:
- Ask the sender to turn on downloads for your link, or to send you a new link with downloads on.
- Ask for the file another way, for example a PDF by e-mail, if you need it offline or for your records.
- Keep reading online. The link works in any browser, including on a phone.
Please respect the restriction. Senders block downloads for a reason, often confidentiality or an NDA, so we do not describe ways around it.
Downloading from a DocSend Space (data room)
- Everything: the download icon at the top right of the Space downloads all content that is available to download.
- One file or folder: use the download icon next to that item.
- ZIP: folders and the whole Space download as a ZIP that keeps the folder structure.
- Large downloads: choose "Email download link", and DocSend e-mails you a link.
- Not included: URL links and files the sender marked as not downloadable.
- Index: you can also download a CSV index of the Space.

Is there a DocSend app to download?
No. DocSend's help center says: "Currently, DocSend does not have a dedicated mobile app". It works in mobile browsers, and you can add a home-screen shortcut (DocSend on mobile). We found no desktop app either. The installable parts are for senders: the free Chrome extension with a Gmail plug-in, and the Outlook add-in for desktop. Both create DocSend links from your inbox (Chrome extension, Outlook add-in). See DocSend integrations and API.
For senders: how to allow or block downloads in DocSend
On a document link
- Go to Content library and click the document.
- Next to the link, open the more-options menu and choose Edit link settings (or create a new link).
- Under Add extra security settings, switch Allow downloads on or off. With it on, visitors can download and print from the viewer.
- Click Update Link. Changes apply in real time to a link you have already sent.
Tip from DocSend: if you allow downloads but do not want the file edited, upload it as a PDF. Sources: Link settings in the Content library, How to update link settings (all plans).
In a Space
- The Space link has an Allow downloads toggle that controls whether visitors can download content in the Space. It is available on Standard, Advanced and Advanced Data Rooms.
- In the Space's Content tab, each item also has a Downloadable setting, so you can allow downloads for some files only.

Files that are always downloadable
Some files cannot be previewed in DocSend: rtf, txt, archives (zip, 7z, rar and similar) and spreadsheets over 40 MB. They are download-only, so downloading is always on for them, and they cannot be watermarked. You need Standard or higher for them (Download-only files). If a file must not leave the viewer, convert it to PDF before you upload it.
The sender's view: block downloads, watermark, and know who read what
Turning off downloads stops the easy copy. Most senders of confidential decks, CIMs or data rooms also want two more things. A watermark that names the viewer, so a photo or a leaked page can be traced. And identity, so you know who read it, not only that "someone" opened a link. In DocSend, the dynamic watermark, e-mail verification, NDAs and screenshot protection are on the Advanced plans ($150–$180/month billed yearly for 3 users, DocSend pricing).
How HelpRange does it:
- "Allow download & print" per link, for every file type. When it is off, nobody can download, not even ZIP files. This is on Pro, $39 per team per month.
- Dynamic watermark with each viewer's e-mail on every page, also on Pro (watermarking).
- E-mail verification, passcode, expiry, views limit and no forwarding per link. You can also revoke access, or replace the file after sending.
- NDA before access and screenshot protection on Unlimited ($174 per team per month, or $139 billed yearly), or in a $199 one-time Deal Room Pass for one 90-day deal.
- Page-by-page analytics and a replay of each visit, so you see which pages a buyer actually read.
Your whole team, unlimited guests, one price. Or $199 for a single deal. No sales call. More: disable download and print · let reviewers read documents without downloading them · DocSend alternatives by price.
FAQ
How do I download a DocSend document?
Open the link and click the download icon in the top right-hand corner of the viewer. It is there only if the sender turned on Allow downloads for your link. In a Space you can download one item, a folder or the whole Space as a ZIP.
Why can't I download a DocSend file?
The sender has turned off downloads for your link. Ask the sender to update the link settings or to send you the file another way. DocSend's help center gives the same advice.
Can I download a DocSend file as a PDF?
DocSend's help center does not describe a format choice for visitors. You get the file the sender uploaded, under the name shown on DocSend. If you need a PDF, ask the sender.
Is there a DocSend app?
No dedicated mobile app; DocSend works in mobile browsers. Senders can install the Chrome extension (with Gmail) and the Outlook add-in to create links.
How do I stop people downloading my DocSend document?
Edit the link settings and turn off Allow downloads. In a Space, use the Space link's Allow downloads toggle or each file's Downloadable setting. Upload as PDF, because download-only file types such as zip, txt and large spreadsheets are always downloadable.
Can DocSend senders see who downloaded?
DocSend shows visits and engagement per link. To know exactly who it was, require an e-mail, or use e-mail verification on the Advanced plans. In HelpRange, each document's statistics count views and downloads, and an e-mail gate or NDA tells you who the viewer was.
